CO: Search for adopted boys uncovers subsidy lapses

Under Colorado's current system, social workers aren't allowed to check on children once they've been adopted unless there is an allegation of abuse or neglect — even in cases such as the Bryants where the children have been identified as having "special needs" and the parents are eligible for government subsidies.

CT: Bill would expand notice of child abuse complaints

A Connecticut legislative committee has endorsed a proposal that requires state child welfare officials to inform parents who don't have custody of their children about abuse or neglect complaints that involve their children.

FL: Prescription drug abuse leads to spike in neglect cases, child protection investigators say

In Pasco County, the news is even worse. Between 2008 and 2010, cases of child neglect or abuse where investigators determined drugs were being misused rose 108 percent, said Kevin Doll, spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

The Safety Net Clinical Conference brought together about 100 people, including child protective staff, social workers and doctors, to educate them on how best to communicate with and help people from plural families. Polygamists don’t often come to the government for help — Draper didn’t when she left the FLDS Church. If they do reach out, she said, it’s important to treat them as individuals who don’t need to be “rescued.”

There have been allegations of coercion of birth mothers to relinquish babies. On the orphanage side, there have been accusations of fraud, in particular, reports that some Americans have been misled about the age of the child they’re adopting
